Some might wonder why using a builder is more beneficial than simply using a template and making the changes in Microsoft Word. Quite simply, resume builders offer advanced tools many job seekers don't have. Builders enable users to convert resumes into multiple formats like pdfs and text. If you've ever tried to copy and paste your resume from Word onto the Internet, you know it's not pretty. Builders also provide tools to build a resume that is web-ready.
Myth #2: Provide a list of your personal interests. You may love scuba diving, have a cat weighing 93 pounds, and were the secretary in your neighborhood cross-stitch association, but how relevant are those details in your professional life? The answer: not. Generally speaking, hiring managers are interested in how you can make or save their company money. If the "personal interest" details you listed are not relevant to that overall goal, forget it. They simply take up space and distract from the focus of your resume.
Continue to pay attention - You've got to renew, update and continue to re-write your resume as you gain additional work experience, education and training. Don't continue to submit the same dated resume over and over again, with resume gaps in employment history. Carefully read through the complete duties and responsibilities of the position, then read through a second time - once you fully understand what is required, make sure that your resume matches what the job is asking for. Too many resumes are trashed because the applicant sends in a generic resume, failing to provide specific documentation stating their qualifications to perform the duties of the position. Don't let that happen to you.
This problem is aggravated by the fact that most professional resume writers don't have the behind the scene background that I do, so when choosing a resume writer, be sure and interview them first, before committing to use their services. In the interest of full disclosure, I do not offer a resume writing service other than assisting my active candidates with resume revisions prior to submitting their resume to a client.
If you continue to deliver duties a resume that establishes you as an expert in your career field, it will make reviewing your resume much easier and you are more likely to get the interview...establishing "credibility" with the employer then becomes EASY, and is a critical and crucial piece of the puzzle for anyone who is truly seeking to really land the job.
The easiest and most logical place to start is in the career section of the company's website, if one is available. Many company websites will also have a section that describes their core values, mission, or overall approach to their business. These sections will be filled with keywords such as "integrity," "flexibility," "leadership" and "teamwork," qualities that are valued in most positions and by most organizations. Make sure your attorney resume provides examples that illustrate these various qualities.
